Amazon snowball

Hello geeks, Cloud computing is trending right now. Both provider and consumers are providing and demanding more and more cloud storage and computing resources day by day, which are accessible remotely from anywhere in the world. Tech giant like Google, Microsoft, IBM and others are vying to be go-to provider.

But one company remained the leader AMAZON. AWS technologies are behind a lot of services that we use today from a lift, checking your video door bell to watching our favourite shows on netflix, amazon prime, ULLU movies etc. AWS has been one of AMAZON's most profitable business last year.

There are approx 2.2 million customers using aws services today. These includes some of the big name like Goldman Sachs, and over 4000+ government agencies. But the challenges for amazon arises here. Most of the users on aws are generating a huge amount of data(in petabytes even in yottabytes) and moving them from one place to other over the internet is the nightmare for both parties. Not just only the transferring fees here matters but also the time it takes and the probability of failure are always there.

So, overcome from these issue amazon came up with the idea to build a physical products to transfer a huge amount of data easier, which are capable of operating in very uneven physical conditions  called snowball and even a giant truck called snowmobile to help companies to move a huge amount of data.

One question arise here obviously in your mind that why companies moving their data to aws. The answer is pretty simple, most of the companies save b/w 22 to 54 % vs building their own data center, building their their own newtorks and powering them up and having people to maintain them. Another reason could be, the company who wanted to change their cloud service provider. One of the major reason is not the cost, instead of the flexibility developers can get access to massive amount of compute, storage and n/w resourcing resulting into AWS as the largest cloud service provider in the world. AWS is resulting as a boon for startup where startup companies get access to huge storage and computing by just spending some pennies.

Snowball is cutting both the time and cost. One snowball can store up to 50 TB (5000 DVDs) data at once. The largest snowball AWS has storage capacity of 110 TB (11000 DVDs). Designing such a physical product is not a easy task. Since, the product should be durable as well as less than 50 pounds. It even passed the military explosive test and airdrop test as well from 28 feet height 80 times. It passed the DOD 901 barge explosive test, which included 83 pound of plastic explosive. It has 6 micron dust filter technology that allows it to use it in dusty area as well like in desert areas.(Specially military data capture). It works even in uneven temperature ranging from -20 C to 140 C. When the volcano was going off in Hawaii a USGS (United States Geological Survey) used the snowball, they have local server and the lava was coming up on their building and they didn't want to lose all that extremely valuable data they had collected.

Even Hollywood starts using snowball services, when the shoots are on remote location the use snowball for shooting the actions and ships it back to their studio and collect those data later. Amazon is the first in cloud computing who came up with this unique ideas, but competitor starts the similar kind of services. Like Microsoft, it is 2nd player in public cloud computing and physical product for data transfer support(called data box). Data box supports 1 Peta Bytes of storage, making it larger than IBM and Google offer today.

Google cloud services is 3rd key player in the public cloud market, it allows a data storage ranging from 100 TB to 480 TB of storage. It can be attached on the rack on your data center but unfortunately it is not as popular as aws is. But aws is the only, in public cloud market which allows even the transport the huge amount of data off line from one place to another using snowmobile. One snow mobile can handle 1250 snowball(100 peta byte) at once.

DigitalGlobe is the largest producer of satellite images in the world. They has challenge when it come to move their data. Actually it will take approx 10 years to move their data over the fastest possible network available today. Even DigitalGlobe is the first customer who demanded a truck for moving their data. Even aws snowmobile is itself a portable data center with it's own power generator, cooling system, tracking system and all. So, that's all about aws's snowball and snowmobile that you as a tech geek should aware of.
